– Been a while – Zack Kennedy

October 28, 2011

Greetings all!  It has been a while since our last post so we thought we would fill you in on what we have been doing down here!

We had the chance to visit another city in the state of Goiás called Goiânia.  We went with several other exchange students, a few of whom are Americans from Iowa who attended an intensive Portuguese class there and we were able to meet other students at the university there and there were gracious enough to let us stay in their student housing.

The difference between Goiânia and Brasília is huge! Goiânia has a little more history as it is an older city, and therefore has a few different cultural traditions.  We were able to see some choro music at a street festival.  Choro is kind of a forerunner to samba music and developed at the same time as early/ragtime jazz and has some similarities.  It was great to see several different groups performing the traditional music.  That same night we also saw a group playing Brazilian and American jazz at a club near the festival.

Also we have been playing a weekly trio gig with a guitar player from UnB who will be joining us in Louisville next semester as part of the exchange.  His name is Eudes Carvalho and he is a great musician and friend!  He is helping us expand our Brazilian repertoire and we are getting him more used to some jazz standards.  He, along with the other two musicians joining us, will be a great addition to the program at UofL.

Other than this we have a great performance planned at a place called “Casa Thomas Jefferson” here in Brasília with the other two Americans from CCM, Professor Renato Vasconcellos, and the three students from UnB going to Louisville next semester.  We will play half jazz and half Brazilian music.  It should be a blast, and we are looking forward to reuniting with the CCM guys who are studying in a different city now.

Until next time!!
