– My Time in Brasil: Part two of Many – Zack Kennedy

August 21, 2011

Things are going well here in Brasília!  We have moved into our new apartment for the start of the school year and are living with one other American and a student from France.  We have also met a lot of the other foreign exchange students here at UnB and everyone is getting along well.

We have been playing at a restaurant every Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it has been fun playing jazz standards and bossa-novas with a Brazilian singer and guitar player.  It is really helping to expand our repertoire of Brazilian music.

Classes started this past week and have gone great so far.  We are enrolled in a Portuguese course, a course about Brazilian rhythms, private lessons, big band, and a jazz combo.  We auditioned for the big band this past week and await our results on Monday!

Two professors (Phil DeGreg, piano and Kim Pensyl, trumpet) from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music,  the other American school involved in the exchange are here in Brasília this week and came to our first combo meeting to play with us and to talk to the students here about the exchange and jazz music.  We also had the great pleasure to play a jam session with them and see them play a duo concert.

We are trying to plan a few trips to neighboring cities on the weekends with some of the other exchange students as well so we will keep you posted!

Until next time!
